Laissez-Passer for the Deceased
A LAISSEZ-PASSER FOR THE DECEASED is a document issued by an embassy or consulate of the Republic of Croatia for a deceased person (Croatian or foreign citizens) to be buried in the Republic of Croatia.
What to enclose with the application?
- extract from Register of Deaths (prescribed form from the recipient country for use in the Republic of Croatia)
- medical certificate of death, stating the cause of death (confirming there was no infectious disease)
- proof of citizenship of the deceased
- Croatian passport or Croatian identity card of the deceased (if the Croatian citizen had a passport)
- approval (certificate) for transport of the deceased issued by the country they are being transported from
- information about the carrier (funeral home): driver’s personal information, passport number, vehicle registration number; if the deceased is being transported by aircraft, information on the flight number, airline and airport of landing is required, as well as information on subsequent means of transport, on border crossings and on the person taking over the body
- in case the deceased was a foreign citizen to be buried in Croatia, a certificate (written proof) of the cemetery (or parish) where the deceased is to be buried/interred also needs to be enclosed
- a consular fee is charged in accordance with the Administrative Fees Act – payment in cash is not accepted
In specific cases, the consular officer may also request other required documents.
The transport of urns containing ashes of the deceased does not require a laissez-passer, only a certificate issued by the crematorium (to be shown to police officers when entering Croatia).
Transit of the deceased through Croatia does not require a laissez-passer issued by the Republic of Croatia.

A LAISSEZ-PASSER CAN BE REQUESTED DURING REGULAR HOURS OF THE EMBASSY / CONSULATE, WITHOUT HAVING TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT.
